Free Workshops for members

(March to May 2010)

Graham Bushnell, John Dawkins and Fiona Morel are offering three series of FREE WORKSHOPS to MEMBERS.

(If you are not a paid-up member this year, it is not too late. You can join to take part in the workshops. Membership forms will be available at the workshops. Membership fee: adult 35 euros, student 15 euros).

The 8 workshops will take place on TUESDAY EVENINGS (starting promptly at 8pm) in the ESPACE WILSON, Le Pecq (where?).

3 workshops on “Working on words” (Fiona)

Tuesdays March 16th, March 23rd, March 30th

“The meanings of words are NOT in the words; they are in us” – (Hayakawa: Language in thought and action) Experimenting with very different styles of theatre, we’ll investigate the specific use of the spoken word in the theatre. How unrealistic is theatrical dialogue? Are characters in theatre doomed to talk more (and far more eloquently) than in real life? Do words tell us what a character on stage is thinking or feeling – or is this expressed with non-verbal communication? What are we left with when we take out all intention in a dialogue? What happens if we approach a dialogue out of context and without clues? What and where is the “sub-text”? Can words themselves create a mood? How do people learn a text? What pitfalls are there when learning a text?

There will be prepared and unprepared work in the three workshops but it should all be VERY ENJOYABLE! For them to be as profitable as possible, Fiona would like participants to attend all three.

The absolute deadline for signing up is Tuesday 9th March but the sooner the better as Fiona will prepare material that suits the participants.
There needs to be a minimum of 12 people and a maximum of 24 people. So first come, first served. Priority will be given to people who can attend all three.

2 workshops on Staging (Graham)

Tuesdays April 6th, April 13th

There is no right or wrong way to do things when it comes to staging; there are simply things that work and things that don't. The first of the two sessions will be given over to talking about the various elements that should be taken into account when staging a show, e.g. visibility, audibility, appropriacy of movement and gesture, focus, “business”… Groups will then prepare a very short scene for the second session (the same scene for each group) with a view to comparing the results from a staging point of view.
Mininum number of participants: 10.
